About marginalia

I know I want to write in my margins, I just don’t know how. I think ebooks are best for annotating: I can search my notes, and easily save/erase them when I want to read the book again. But then, what do I do with my paperbacks? Should I just stop buying them, and start buying ebooks only? Should I buy paperbacks, then scan them and annotate the electronic copies? Probably the latter, but I’m still looking into alternatives.
