I've been fairly absent lately, and I figured it was time to post something. Thank you for your patience and/or your attention. The most common question I get is, "when is RCU going to be updated for 2.12?" (including the large percentage that phrase it differently, not understanding the documentation's Compatibility section.) The short answer is, I don't know. I really don't have much time, at all, to work on it. When I do work on it, I'm usually either classifying support emails, responding to them as quickly as possible, or (more often) hack on the code. The progress of RCU has been as such: I was sleeping in my car during the Spring, Summer, and Autumn of 2020 when RCU was principally developed. I had loads of time. All of it. I did RCU and Parabola-rM half for spite, and half for just wanting the software product myself at any cost (and to base further projects upon). After I put RCU for sale (which happened at 2:00 AM in a Planet Fitness parking lot), I realized quickly there were some bad flaws with the first version, and over the next couple releases ironed a lot of wrinkles out. The following November, I began using that money to buy a small, single room in a shared house. I paid $475 per month in rent, and RCU was just enough to live. RCU is a little piece of software and paid below minimum wage. During this time, I continued working out of my car because it was the only place I could go to be alone. I visited Zanzibar once to meet my partner. One year later, and with intense focus on its rendering process, I made another release. Since then, I have moved halfway across the country to Boston and work during the day at the Free Software Foundation. This is literally my dream organization. I consider it an elite thing, and very much a privilege to be in Boston. The cherry is that I get paid to be here and promote one of my favorite things in the world. I have never lived somewhere so nice, and never had fewer hours to work on RCU. And I'm sorry that it's slowed my involvement in RCU. But is development stagnant? No; I do continue to whittle away at it, and am considering really just pushing everything on a Redmine instance for some visibility of what I do. I continue to focus intensely on the rendering process, which has (with work starting last October) greatly improved its capabilities by directly writing PDF objects. It has CLI flags for accessing all of them. It has 2.12 highlighter feature support, and it writes PDF highlight objects intentionally-right (and frustratingly against the spec, which all PDF readers go against). Plus, more small things not worth mentioning here. That's all not to mention that during my move, I couldn't make any Windows or macOS builds because of consecutive issues with my Mac Mini which was acting as my build server. Getting that together took a couple months. There have been improvements, and will continue to be, but slowly. Except for notebook exports, every other feature of the program works correctly under 2.12. Thank you, again, for your patience, I am trying to improve it, but please understand that my life has changed and I'm still trying to find a schedule that works. I do read all emails that come through and respond when I can. I have not terminated anyone's access to the RCU-Announce archive since the New Year, and everyone will get a 2.12 update and I hope that will be enough.
