To: Everyone From: Davis Remmel Date: 2018-07-22 10:09 AM Subject: Supervised Autonomous Surgery I'm thinking about medical technologies right now, and AI's future role in helping surgeons. I think in the future, we're going to see surgery on a much smaller scale, possibly even smaller than the naked eye. In this world, there will still be the requirement for dexterity and decision-making, so a surgeons may still be employed. The technology may exist to allow a surgeon to trace where a suture is needed, but the computer does the stitching action. There could even be an immersive experience for the surgeon, having him work in a time-forwarded system (opposite of time-delay). This would be accomplished with a computer watching the real surgery, and simulating actions as the surgeon takes them. After a period of time (a few seconds, an 'abort-able' timeout), the computer performs (i.e. commits) the operation to the patient. A pretty neat future lays ahead of us. -- Davis
